Fillers Q & A

Orchid Aesthetics Medical Spa

What are fillers?

Fillers are injectable solutions that help reduce the appearance of wrinkles, augment your lips, replace volume loss, rejuvenate your skin, and raise scar depressions. Dr. Kerns offers Restylane®, Juvederm®, Juvederm Voluma® XC, Belotero®, and Radiesse® injectables. Typically made of hyaluronic acid, collagen, and calcium hydroxylapatite, fillers mimic chemicals that your body produces naturally.

What is the difference between the available fillers?

Restylane

Restylane is often used to address mild to medium wrinkles. It is FDA-approved to correct wrinkles around your mouth and nose. In some cases, it can reduce the appearance of dark circles under your eyes and lift your brow.

Juvederm and Juvederm Voluma

Juvederm is an FDA-approved volumizer used to correct mild to moderate wrinkles like smile lines and crow’s feet. Juvederm Voluma can help reshape your cheeks or chin if you experience volume loss. Also, Juvederm can be used for lip augmentation and to lift your brow.

Belotero

Dr. Kerns uses Belotero Balance to correct upper lip wrinkles, smile lines, and chin wrinkles.

Radiesse

Radiesse corrects facial volume loss and contouring with dramatic results. It adds volume, correcting deep wrinkles and folds. It also stimulates your body’s natural collagen production for longer-lasting results.

What happens during a filler treatment?

During your 10-20 minute session, you relax in one of Dr. Kerns' comfortable treatment rooms. The injections aren't usually painful, but if you are sensitive to or afraid of needles, she can apply a topical anesthetic to assure your comfort during the injections. Dr. Kerns marks the injection sites on your face and slowly and methodically makes the injections, frequently pausing to examine her progress and to gently massage the filler into place.

What should I expect after having fillers?

You may go back to work and your normal activities immediately after treatment, although you should avoid any vigorous activity for 24 hours after treatment. Be careful in the sun — wear a broad-brimmed hat and sunscreen. Your results should be detectable soon after treatment and should last for 6-18 months, depending on the kind of filler used and the location of your injections. You can have follow-up treatments to maintain your appearance.
